Introduction to Investment Intervention
When investments go wrong, don’t just sit on them.
The milestones keep slipping. Reporting raises more questions than it answers. Further capital is requested, but the route to an exit remains unclear. For the investor, the immediate problem is knowing what is really happening and what can be done about it.
1648 Capital’s Investment Intervention helps family offices and private investors address underperforming or structurally challenged investments. We focus on private companies, hedge funds and private equity funds where governance failures, operational drift or stakeholder misalignment are impairing value.
We start by reconstructing the investment case: examining the financial position, testing assumptions and identifying the causes of underperformance. The aim is to establish what is at risk, what remains viable and which options deserve further capital or management attention.
That assessment becomes a mandate for action. We work to secure reliable information, establish effective oversight and realign stakeholders. Where required, we reset governance and incentives, intervene operationally and drive an agreed plan with clear responsibilities and milestones. The objective may be a business reset, restructuring, refinancing or an orderly exit. It must be defined and actively pursued.
Our experience spans earlier mandates undertaken by members of the team and intervention work delivered through 1648. Anonymised examples include:
A loss-making enterprise software business. Team members worked on the business model, customer strategy, recruitment and fundraising as part of a turnaround and preparation for institutional investment.
A technology infrastructure business. 1648 has advised on strategic repositioning and commercial realignment, identifying defensible use cases and refining priorities to connect technical capability with a credible business proposition.
A business with underused intellectual property. 1648’s work has covered commercial and licensing models, partnership structuring and stakeholder alignment to support commercialisation through a dedicated operating platform.
These situations require judgement about where value remains and the practical ability to act on it. Our role is to bring both to the investor’s side of the table, from the initial diagnosis through execution and resolution.
Investment Intervention sits alongside Platform Engineering and Private Markets within 1648’s wider focus: fixing investments, building platforms and directing capital. Here, the priority is capital already committed and the decisions that determine what happens next.
Real answers. Active engagement. Decisive action.
